The 7th International Symposium on SCS and IO Convened in Nansha, Guangzhou

Spanning from March 28 to 30, 2024, “The 7th International Symposium on the South China Sea and Indian Ocean --- Ecological Environment (IOSCS 2024)” took place in vibrant Nansha, Guangzhou, China. Organized by the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) (GML), the symposium attracted nearly 50 leading experts and scholars from France, the United States, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and other countries and regions. Participants delivered 20 insightful oral presentations and showcased 8 informative poster presentations, promoting international academic exchanges and cooperation.

Academician Si Zhang, director of GML, extended a warm welcome through a written message, setting the tone for the symposium's collaborative spirit. Professor Danling Tang, renowned for her expertise, presided over the opening ceremony and expertly chaired the symposium. The event boasted a roster of internationally acclaimed experts and early-career researchers, such as Professor Louis Legendre, a distinguished foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences. Esteemed experts including Professor Igor M. Belkin, Professor Hongbin Liu, Professor Dongyan Liu, alongside rising stars Associate Professor Muhsan Ali Kalhoro, Assistant Professor Shengli Chen, and Dr. Yi Sui, contributed their insights.

This illustrious gathering engaged in rigorous discourse on pivotal scientific phenomena including the “wind pump”, “biological pump”, and “carbon pump”. The symposium also delved into the latest advancements in ocean remote sensing, observation technology, and underwater gravimeters. These discussions not only enhanced the participants’ understanding of the ecological environment of the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean but also sparked innovative strategies for marine ecological preservation and global governance.

Established in June 2006, the IOSCS Organizing Committee, under the esteemed leadership of Professor Danling Tang, has pioneered international dialogue in marine science. To date, the committee has successfully convened six international symposiums across diverse cities in China, Sri Lanka, and beyond, creating a vibrant platform for global exchange in marine science, technology, and ecological conservation. These gatherings have significantly bolstered scientific and technological collaboration among nations bordering the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, fostering a spirit of cooperation and shared discovery.
