Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) (hereinafter referred to as “Guangzhou Marine Laboratory”) is a provincial scientific research institution organized by the People’s Government of Guangzhou Municipality, and it was licensed by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province in November 2018.

With the Innovation Academy of South China Sea Ecology and Environmental Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Guangdong University of Technology as the main supporting units, Guangzhou Marine Laboratory was built in collaboration with the marine science and technology strengths of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Guo Yonghang, Mayor of Guangzhou, worked as the leader of the laboratory construction leading group, and Academician Chen Yiyu and Academician Qin Dahe served as Honorary Director and Director of the Academic Committee, respectively.

It was estimated that the municipal and provincial governments at all levels have invested 7 billion yuan and the co-builders invested more than 10 billion yuan in the construction of the laboratory.

With the mission of “Base in the Greater Bay Area, dedicate into the South China Sea, and cross the blue ocean”, Guangzhou Marine Laboratory focuses on the core scientific issue of “the formation and evolution the marginal sea of the South China Sea and its resource and environmental effects” in response to major national demand of “Marine Territorial Security and Strategic Resource Development in the South China Sea”. Besides, the Laboratory strives to address key scientific and technological issues such as sustainable development of islands and reefs, sustainable use of resources and sustainable ecological development, and carries out extensive research in six major topics.

Since its foundation, Guangzhou Marine Laboratory has carried out its routine work smoothly under the guidance and support of all stakeholders. It has attracted about 200 talents and 17 top-notched teams including 8 academician teams. In order to serve the national marine science and technology needs, Guangzhou Marine Laboratory has actively sought national and provincial resources, led 3 national key research and development projects, and participated in 1 national key research and development project. Moreover, the Laboratory has promoted the industrialization process of “combustible ice” by virtue of its core technology.

Additionally, its two key laboratories in Hong Kong and Shenzhen have integrated innovation resources of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, enabling substantial collaboration in marine science and technology forces.
